I prepaid for a vehicle at the San Francisco Airport location a week in advance. Upon arrival to San Francisco, I was told the reserved vehicle was unavailable and that I had to pay for an upgrade or receive a refund.
I felt like this was a bait and switch and expressed that to the clerk who informed me that I would have to pay the upgrade or leave with nothing (or wait until a vehicle became available)... I asked for a supervisor and was told no one was immediately available. I had a schedule to keep so I took an available vehicle... After returning vehicle on the 21st to the same location that I picked it up at... i was told to contact the 1800 number since no supervisor was immediately available (AGAIN)... I had a flight to catch and couldn't wait and returned to Phoenix with the belief that our business was complete... on Thursday, Avis attempted to charge almost $1k in additional fees to my card... Avis called and left voicemails demanding that we return the vehicle on the 24th and the 25th... I called and spoke with Avis customer service on Thursday 24th explaining that the vehicle was returned... I was questioned by the rep as if he didn't believe that I returned the vehicle. I told him that I was back in Phoenix and the car was returned. I was back on the phone again with them on Saturday 26th, I received condescending remarks and insults from the first rep around 0800 that morning... I was placed on hold for a supervisor for over 15 minutes before the rude rep disconnected me with no explanation... I called back and was on hold for over a half hour... just to be told that the vehicle was not properly checked in on the 21st by their people in San Francisco... when I asked what Avis could do for me for all the aggravation, headaches and issues for this past week and the rude rep from this morning... An Avis supervisor said they would only offer a $30 discount on our next vehicle rental... REALLY? That's the best you can offer? I WILL NEVER USE AVIS AGAIN!

Rented a car drove 2 hours to Wilkes-Barre, PA and got a flat tire. I looked for a spare but it had been removed. This should be checked by AVIS prior to rentals as a safety precaution. At 7:30pm is when the flat occurred, it took 7 calls to get through a busy tone with AVIS's 1800 number but once I got through they sent a ticket from AVIS to roadside service for a 2-way tow. The vehicle to replace mine was in Newark, NJ (196 miles away). The 2-way tow would take 4 to 6 hours amd would start at 8:30pm (so expected at 12:30 - 2:30am). At 10pm I called Roadside to get a quick update (on hold for 40 minutes) and they answered and let me know they had not started on my ticket. It would now be 5 to 7 hours from 10:45pm. I had a flight the next morning 2 hours away so this was no longer going to work. Note I was in an abandoned parking lot with moderate to high crime. I asked if we could change the tow from 2 way to a 1 way tow and take a Lyft to Philadelphia to make my flight. The AVIS representative (Corey) told me to take my keys with me so the car doesn't get stolen she stated that I could drop them off at any AVIS in the 48 states. I then took a ride to Philadelphia for $200. I arrived at the hotel at 2am and I had a text stating that a tow truck would be arriving around 300 minutes (5 hours...). I would have missed my flight. The next day I landed in Atlanta (lay over on my way to Albuquerque) and I got a call from the towing company saying they were at the car but needed the keys, I told them that that wasn't going to happen and they hung up. I called AVIS on Friday (3 days after the flat tire) and asked if the car was picked up and they said no. I asked to talk to a manager and they said they would call me in 48 hours... (AVIS is nothing but unhelpful and slow). They did not call me at all so I called them the following Friday and got a hold of a manager (Jack... by the way just as useless) and he said I can't do anything for you until the contract is closed... which will take 3 to 5 days. I will have to call next Friday to follow up and AVIS refuses to call me back after the contract is closed but is now my responsibility to keep calling till it gets closed.

NEVER AVIS

Rented from Avis in Denver to attend a wedding. Talking to other guests that rented cars at Denver airport Avis charged me a few hundred more $$ than others WHY???? Called Avis when I returned home, no recourse. Out of curiosity I went to the Avis site and put in same rental information for exactly a week after my rental, $246 less. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER rent from Avis. They are criminals!!!!!!!!

Never use Avis!

One month after returning vehicle I was charged $2300 for a stolen catalytic converter. After spending hours trying to get to the bottom of the charge, we were told that the charge was supposed to go to the person who rented the vehicle after we returned it. NEVER GO TO AVIS!

Go somewhere else

I am a nurse who has worked through the entire pandemic and need to rent a car to get mine fixed. I made a reservation for a date and my mechanic called me a little over the 24 hrs cancellation policy time and said the parts were delayed, again. I called Avis to try to cacel or scudule the rental. They charged me 3 times the price of the rental to cancel the reservation as i couldn't use it that day. I spend and hour on the phone trying to reschedule and to get rude no's. Do yourself a favor go anywhere else for your rental.

Don't Bother with Them

These are one of the most false advertising companies that has the worst of customer service. They're not able to help you in any kind of service without beating around the bush with you. I advise people not to use them period even Hertz. Very sorry companies.

Fraud

Fraud. We are suing Avis and are initiating a criminal investigation into their obviously criminal business practice. Charged us $100 for 7 gallons of gas that we have proof that we filled the tank 0.5 miles from the airport. We believe this is systemic fraud. See you in court:)

Pickup location Lax Airport

Pickup location Lax Airport. 1 hour long wait time. I was charge for gas I replaced. I did not sign for gas refill or insurance never do. There was no attendant to check the car upon returning the car. I called and the lady said I sign for gas but she couldn’t provide proof of my signature. My receipt have no signature next to that option. Avis will never get my business again. Poor customer service and over charged me.

Be ready to pay more than expected

They charge $4/L for fuel if the tank is not full, I was only informed of this upon returning the car. I returned the car with 1/3 tank left, still got charged a full tank on that price. Which amounted to $186 for a Hyundai i30?! Customer service was also average, the retractable key was stuck in the case, need to use the tip of a pen to release it, they offered me a pen so that I can use that to get the key out!!! Great problem solving for your customers! Will not be hiring from the company again if I have any other choices.

I rented an SUV from the Denver airport…

I rented an SUV from the Denver airport on December 26th. It was very busy with long lines and a significant wait time. I was finally given a key and told where the car was parked. Their was no check out procedure and there was a crack in the windshield. I accepted the car and left because we had been at AVIS for an hour, and we were ready to start our vacation. 3 months later I am told that I am being charged for the cracked window. They will not accept any discussion from me and do not even acknowledge that the glass was cracked when I picked it up. I am left with a >$300 charge for something I did not do. I will never rent from Avis again unless this issue is resolved.

RIDICULOUS cleaning fee!

We rented an SUV for a week to drive from Vegas up to Zion National Park. After a week of hiking the vehicle had some dirt in it - we got out what we could without having a vacuum (no floor mats in place). Upon returning home we received a letter from them saying we were being charged $450 for a "cleaning fee" for "excess dirt". Mind you, this is more than we paid to rent the vehicle for the entire week! We called to dispute it (twice) to no avail. We will NEVER be renting from them again and advise that no one else does the same. We were told we had agreed to return the vehicle in the condition we received it. It literally had 5 miles on the odometer - but why no floor mats? That would've helped the cause immensely. Whatever. Lesson learned I guess. BEWARE!

Not an AVIS customer any longer

Do NOT use AVIS.

Do NOT use AVIS.
I prepaid $2400 for a full size SUV, which is ridiculous to begin with, but we needed a full size for a 4 day ski trip so I went for it. Three weeks later I get my credit card statement and I see not only the $2,400, but another $3,400 charge. Called customer service multiple times and they won't refund the money. I never approved this and I was assured at the airport when I picked up there would be no other charges and it was all prepaid. Needless to say, I am absolutely irate. These people are deceitful crooks. Judging by other reviews it looks like I'm not alone.

They don't answer their phone. If you want to contact the office, you have to go directly to the office and wait in line.

On June, 24,2020, I arrived at sky harbor airport rented a vehicle from Payless or Budget. Upon arrival, there was a long waiting period. The associate told me he would give me a better car for the same price as the initial rental I reserved. Also, he stated I could pay 40 dollars to receive the advantage of bringing the car back on empty if I chose. Two weeks later when I come to extend my rental I found out Avis was overcharging me and had to get the price adjusted. Later I called the 1800 number to extend my rental from July 24 to August 24th in which Avis did do. On August 24th, I called to extend my rental for two months. However, the associate said I could only extend for 1 month (August 24th -September 24th). So, I submitted for another month. The associate told me she submitted it. So I was under the understanding that my rental had been extended. On September 17th, I received a text message as well as a phone call stating that I needed to return the vehicle because it was critically past due. If not returned, the police will be notified of the care being stolen. I'm a travel Crisis nurse; I had to leave work and drive 35 mins to get to the Avis/budget location in Chandler. On the way to Avis, I called the 1800 number again. The associates were saying my submission was "improperly put in" by the associate. I asked why would I need to bring the vehicle back. Can you guys just charge my card on file for the month I initially requested? The associate said no and I had to return the car. The associate at the Chandler, AZ location was very nonchalant. I explained the situation above and he stated the people I spoke to on the 1800 number were not the boss. They cannot extend my rental. I should have called an actual location. I was explaining to him that they already extended it for me once. Thus, they can extend the rental. Also, the automated system has an option to extend your rental. So, I was not understanding why the information he was providing and the system was contraindicating. I asked him to refund my money for the charges and fees placed because this whole situation was an AVIS error not mine. He said he could not adjust any charges on my account. I would have to go back to the location, my contract originated. Then, I drove to the Sky Harbor Airport and the associates there was very calm and truly tried to explain everything. However, the manager stated that he could not adjust any charges and fees and that I would have to call corporate to get a refund. Also, he said I would have to return the car officially. Then, the corporate associates will be able to look at my account. I officially returned the vehicle. While in the Avis location at Sky Harbor, I called the 1800 number again. I explained the situation, and the associate stated my account was being investigated. I asked to speak with someone who can refund my money that day, because Avis charged my card on file right at 3,000 dollars. My usual rental charges was 1,000-1060 per month. I had the car three weeks and three days past August 24. The associate told me there was a 24-48hr period before refund would be given because they had to look at the account. I continued to ask for a refund today. He consistently said no basically. He hung up on me. I called back and spoke with someone different and went through the same process except I found out I couldn't even get another rental for Avis or Budget because I was placed on a DO-NOT-RENT LIST. I explained that I needed to return to work and needed to rent another car. He said he would suggest going to another company until this is cleared. I asked to speak with the manager and the manager said the same thing. I was beyond frustrated. I went to the other companies at the airport and all of them were sold out of cars. So, I was STUCK AT THE AIRPORT WITH NO CAR AND NO WAY TO GET BACK TO WORK. I called the 1800 number again to see if I can speak with someone above the floor supervisor, and I was told I could not. The floor supervisor stated to me that he could not give me the number. I explained my disbelief and disappointment in Avis for how poorly they had treated me. Everybody was very nonchalant. So, I had to catch an uber to my hotel and research locations to get a vehicle. I was CARLESS until Sunday. My experience with AVIS was the ABSOLUTE WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. AVIS FAILED ME AND DID NOT DELIVER ON THEIR PROMISES. Do to the lack of empathy or concern for its customer, I was STRANDED AT THE AIRPORT UNTIL 4PM( 6HOURS)! PLUS, MY WAGES WAS DEDUCTED BECAUSE I COULD NOT RETURN BACK TO WORK. AVIS did a poor job of correcting the mistake made on their part. This was the WORST RENTAL EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. AVIS/BUDGET IS UNTRUSTWORTHY.
